浦安・岩田屋のはじまり

浦安の船宿の始まりは岩田屋からだったのです。

舅(しゅうと)の伊之助が釣船屋「岩田屋」を始めたのよ。大正6年の大津波で家を流され東の方から大川端に来て、釣りが好きだったんでこの商売を始めたらしいけど、ウチは浦安で最初の船宿なのよ。
嫁に来た時には、この並びに4件あったけど隣は投網屋。投網屋は、網師が舳先の台に上がってお客の目の前でぱあっと網を投げて魚を獲って見せて、それを船の上であらいだの天ぷらだのにして食べさせたの。船頭は料理の腕もあったわけ。釣船屋は釣客専門に20人位で乗合船を仕立てるでしょう。お客さんに魚を釣ってもらわなくちゃ話になんないから、つれあいは朝起きると、空見て海見て「雲行き悪いな、なぎ風だな」って、まずは天気予報が仕事だったのよ。
5月初め八十八夜が来ると青ギス釣りのお客さんで大変だったの。青ギスは明け方に釣れる魚だから宵のうちに来て泊まるでしょう。泊まるったって、家は狭いし子どもは多いし。ポンポン蒸気で夕方来るお客さんもいるけど、12時頃タクシーでまた来た、また来たっていうふうに次々と電話もない時代だから不意に来るでしょう。そういうお客は竿いじりながら話し込んじゃって、ほんとなかなか寝ませんよ。

青ギスは臆病な魚で釣師の影が海に写っても、ほんのちょっとの音、セキしただけで逃げていっちゃうってだからりこうな魚だよね。だから脚立の上から釣るんですよ。堅い砂地に50ｍおきに次々と船頭が脚立を立てて、その上にお客さんを置いてくんの。釣れればビクを下げんからようく見ててね。ダメなようだったら櫓(やぐら)ですべり寄って、ほかの場所へと移してやって、船頭もこれでなかなか気を使って大変だったでしょうよ。夜中に来てろくに寝てないだから、いねむりして海に落っこちる人もいたってよ。

屋形船と岩田屋の歴史を英語でご紹介します。

She is Ikuyo Iwata, the daughter of Katsumi Iwata, head of Iwataya, a major yakatabune operator with a history of more than a century to its credit. She made her debut as a yakatabune skipper in July 1992 Iwataya is one of traditional yakatabune operators clustered in the Urayasu district, Chiba Prefecture, facing on Tokyo Bay.
In the Edo period (1603-1867), yakatabune pleasure boats were patronized by daimyo (feudal lords) and wealthy merchants.
Today, about 50 yakatabune, based in Urayasu, are mostly used by corporations for various events and parties. They sail down the Edogawa river and around Tokyo Bay on a three-hour round trip.
“She is quick to learn and has a natural aptitude for the job,” comment veteran yakatabune skippers. Ikuyo said she is always paying close attention to weather conditions since she is responsible for the passengers’ safety.
“While in high school, I aspired to the television industry,” Ikuyo said. When she was about to graduate from college, her father was taken ill and hospitalized. This prompted her to make up her mind to become a yakatabune
skipper so as to help maintain the century-old business of her family. By then she had already taken out a Class A license for operation of small ships.
Her younger brother, now in high school has also started to work part-time on board a yakatabune in order to follow in his sister’s footsteps.
Four hours before each sailing, the skipper herself, now in a smart happi coat, starts preparations to entertain guests, including the setting of the table. After personally welcoming the guests aboard, she takes the helm and skillfully steers her yakatabune down the river and around Tokyo Bay through the heavy maritime traffic off the
metropolis.
